Interestingly, from another angle I always totally power down the home PC & unplug it and the modem as well. I'm not obsessive, but recently the local radio station (wave105.com) ran an interesting and apocryphal list of stories about unfortunate people who have had their computers fried (literally) by direct or indirect lightning strikes. Now in the UK lightning is a fairly uncommon ocurrence, and to get such a rich vein of stories, over several days, on a small regional radio station made me think!
I rated the most unfortunate story - that of a guy who had unhooked (apparently), as soon as he heard the first rumble of thunder, but still lost his PC. The lightning struck a telephone pole several hundred Metres from his home and delivered the killer blow via the 'phone connection of his modem which he had not unplugged. Poor sod!
